In nine years, British instrumental band Maybeshewill has cultivated a loyal following by mixing sweeping guitars with layers of electronic sounds. Guitarist John Helps gives us the scoop on their new album, being independent and Finnish ice hockey.

On Fair Youth
There's the idea of preserving memories and moments in time, and being stuck in a weird place between youth and adulthood. Our friends play strings, brass and even an accordion on it, but since we have to do that live, we’re really working on upping our game for this tour.

On their last Mainland tour…
It was amazing. It’s weird that we get to see surprisingly little because we’re there to work, but we did do some super touristy things. That’s a pretty big wall you have there!

On staying DIY…
It’s tough sometimes, but also liberating. All the decisions are our own, so we feel like we’ve earned any success and only have ourselves to blame when something goes wrong.

On the Finnish ice hockey team skating out to ‘Words for Arabella’ during the World Cup…
That was crazy. Our music gets used a lot to soundtrack YouTube videos and that led to them wanting to use it in a more official context. Our Finnish friends keep us updated on how the team is doing and we all have jerseys, too.
