Heavy flooding has left 21 people dead and tens of thousands displaced as rainstorms battered southern China, Xinhua reports.
Hunan Province has been experiencing heavy rain since Thursday, disrupting traffic, power, communications and raising water levels in major rivers and reservoirs, according to provinical flood control authorities. A villager in Jinwutang Township was killed in a landslide.
In neighbouring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, two people died and over 200,000 residents were affeced after heavy rain toppled 522 housing units and severely damaged hundreds more. Direct economic losses were estimated to be around 119 million yuan ($19 million). Over 5,000 residents have been relocated.
Yunnan Province also saw flash flooding. In Fugong County, 14 houses and two bridges were swept away and a hydropower generation plant inundated with water.
In Qingdao, Shandong Province, 18 people were killed when a wall collapsed on top of them in their dormitory at a recycling plant.
Shenzhen was hit by the city's worst flooding in six years, crippling an intercity railway to Guangzhou and grounding dozens of flights. More than 430mm (16.9 inches) fell on the city's Longhua district by 7pm Sunday.
In Hong Kong, a total of 333 flights were delayed and 14 cancelled. Rain continued into the early hours of Monday morning, disrupting commutes for thousands of workers.
According to the National Meteorology Centre, rain is forecasted to persist in Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong Monday before the weather improves later in the week.
