Tue, Apr 10: Idea Exchange

This week at Idea Exchange, Australian author Corrie Birch, who is the co-founder of ESL training centers in Guangzhou, will talk about how to write and self-publish your own book. Birch, who has been teaching English in China for 15 years, will conduct a live marketing demonstration.

Thu, Apr 12: Trivia Returns to Hooley's

Trivia is back at Hooley's, launching this week after a 6-month(ish) hiatus. Join quiz master Matt Bossons for 40-plus mind-bending questions on topics ranging from current events to pop culture, history to geography and everything in between. Basically, if you can identify all seven species of sea turtles, this quiz is for you. If you can’t identify turtles, this quiz is also for you, as there aren’t many turtle questions. The quiz kicks off at 8.30pm and the top three teams will receive boozy prizes courtesy of the good folks at Hooley’s Irish Pub.

Apr 14-30: The Legendary Swordsman 

Based on the story of the classic novel The Smiling, Proud Wanderer by Louis Cha of Hong Kong (better known by his pen name Jin Yong), this acrobatic play tells the tale of a Chinese martial artist and how he achieves perfection in swordplay. Presented by the Guangzhou Acrobatic Troupe, this exciting spectacle will combine martial arts, acrobatics, drama as well as Cantonese folk music. Don’t miss this sensational showcase of local talent and tradition.

Sun, Apr 15: Daniel Powter 

Daniel Powter, the Canadian who stormed the European charts in 2005 with his single ‘Bad Day’, tours China to recapture the magic. His latest album, the melodic and poppy Turn on the Lights, may have been released more than five years ago, but the crooner is showing his spunk with a recent single (‘Delicious’) that brings fans back for another taste.

This exhibition presents the profiles of more than a dozen women who played a major role in the creation of the Polish nation. Their work – in the fields of politics, education, culture, management and the military – have made a major impact on the lives of Polish communities. Among them, there are those whose names are familiar outside of Poland, as well those who remain unknown to the world. Here, their stories will be taken out of the shadows and introduced in the wide historical and sociological context.

Alfresco’s new menu combines Mediterranean cooking techniques with ingredients commonly used in local cuisines. The main focus of the menu is on prawns, crabs, seabass, cod, and other seasonal seafoods cooked by the use of olive oil to produce light-flavored, healthy dishes. The Mediterranean-themed menu is served daily during dinner, with a selection of Southern European aperitifs and wines. A Mediterranean taster starts at RMB128; A four-course set meal is priced at RMB368 per person, with the menu changing every two weeks.
