April 4: Idea Exchange

This week at the Idea Exchange, André Ley, a local pianist and composer who graduated from Xinghai Conservatory of Music, will talk about the art of composing, sharing some easy principles and patterns to form euphonic melodies while playing the attendees examples from pop music and the cinema. Join this week’s melodic session and exchange your idea of music.

April 5: Salsa and Bachata Experimental Class

Intimidating as it is, the benefits reaped from salsa are well worth any initial pangs of inhibition. Salsa dancers can expect to keep in shape, maintain a positive mood, overcome difficulties communicating with the opposite sex, release pressure and enlarge their social circle, as is written in Salsa Cubana’s online course description. April 6: Hooley’s Trivia Night

April 7: Doc Night

Hosted by Global Friendship, a collection of interesting and curious individuals from around the world, Doc Night is a documentary screening project followed by heated discussion and elevated by various perspectives. The subject of Doc Night this week is Before the Flood, a documentary directed by Fisher Stevens and produced by Leonardo DiCaprio who, through conversations with individuals from a wide range of fields, including tops scientists and Barack Obama, probes into the problem of climate change and feasible solutions.

April 7: Mahan Esfahani Harpsichord Concert 

Before Iranian harpsichord player Mahan Esfahani went to Stanford University where he studied musicology and music history, he, when a young boy, was guided on harpsichord by his father. A BBC New Generation Artist from the year 2008 to 2010, Esfahani has been tirelessly promoting harpsichord as a mainstream concert instrument. Come to Guangzhou Opera House to see a harpsichord concert by Mahan Esfahani, who the Guardian eulogized as “young, suave and eloquent.”

April 7: Female Guitarists Concert 

On April 7, T:union will stage three adroit female guitarists who are of different nationalities and personalities but share a common passion for guitar. They are: Christie Lenée, hailing from the US, whose performances resembles those of legendary guitarist Michael Hedges, Joni Mitchell and Dave Matthews; Taiwanese fingerstyle guitarist Xu Yijuan; and 20-year-old Japanese guitar player Kanaho.

April 7-9: 2017 China (Guangzhou) Pet Expo

Love adorable pets? Yeah, us too. The China (Guangzhou) Pet Expo is the largest of its kind in South China and features all kinds of animals, pet food, medical equipment and other ‘necessities’ for pets. There’s even an animal parade, where dogs, cats, turtles and, uh, spiders (allegedly) will strut down the street together. A wide range of activities will be arranged for your furry friends, while rare species of pets will also be available to take home – for a steep price.

April 7-9: A Zen Trip Weekend Getaway

Getting bored of your oily and calorie-packed diet in the city? Sign up for this weekend getaway at a Buddhist temple in the mountains, where simple, nutritious, healthy vegetarian meals will help to freshen your appetite. A two-day event organized by a group of Zen Buddhism enthusiasts, the trip is open to anyone aged 15-50 and will include activities like meditation, a gongfu tea ceremony and Buddhism classes.

April 8: EuroCham Gala Dinner

April 8-9: Seafood Brunch at Catch

April 9: Tribute to Michael Jackson – String Concert by Aupa Quartet 

From Aupa Quartet’s classical instrument comes a diverse repertoire of groovy, spontaneous music varying from jazz to funk to flamenco. Their own composition, catchy tunes coupled with improvisations, has come to be known as “aupa style.” After playing with distinguished musicians in well-known music halls in Barcelona, France and Italy, Aupa Quartet is to visit Guangzhou this April to give a concert with a MJ-themed repertoire. Don't miss these talented instrumentalists.
