Beijing on Tuesday maintained its orange pollution alert, the second highest level, as severe smog covered the Chinese capital for the fifth straight day.
As of 9:00 am, the density of PM2.5, particles smaller than 2.5 microns in diametre, which have been a major contributor to the smog, reached 414 micrograms per cubic metre, according to the Beijing Environmental Protection Monitoring Centre and US Embassy Beijing Air Quality Monitor.
The China Meteorological Administration predicts that the smog will linger until Wednesday at the earliest, when a cold front from the west is expected to bring increased winds which will help clear the pollution.
Other northern cities and provinces also saw smog over the weekend and on Monday, while heavy pollution that had blanketed Shanghai was mostly cleared by rain.
