A large section of a road in Beijing's Chaoyang District collapsed on Sunday afternoon.

A sinkhole five metres wide (16 feet) and five metres deep appeared at the intersection of Tianshuiyuan Road and Shuiduizi East Street.

According to the Beijing Times, water erupted from a manhole at the junction, flooding the street, before the road around the manhole collapsed.

"The pit was filled with water," a witness told the paper

The sinkhole is believed to have been caused by improper underground construction, and affected the water supply for almost 300 households in the area.
