In the most recent move to clean up the capital, authorities have ordered the removal of signs from buildings around the city. But it looks like the ambitious plan has already started to backfire.
In the past few weeks, workers have removed signs from 14,000 buildings in Beijing – including rooftops and facades. Now that the signs have disappeared, many Beijingers are no longer able to find their way or locate businesses. According to China Daily, city authorities have now vowed to replace many of the torn down signs.
The city is imposing stricter rules on the looks and locations of signs in order to "create an urban skyline that is visually clear and bright."
While this sounds fine and good, the rapid removal of signage has caused all sorts of confusion. Many companies have resorted to hanging handmade banners and signs outside of their businesses to replace their old signs.
Regardless of the confusion, the city will continue to impose strict rules on signage. The new rules state that all signs and billboards attached to roofs will no longer be allowed. All buildings are only allowed to have one sign featuring the company's registered name, and it must be located on the third story or higher.
