The blaze came less than two weeks after a deadly fire killed 19 in the Beijing suburb of Daxing. An investigation found that the fire had been caused by faulty electrical wiring in an “illegal” building. The incident was the catalyst for a 40-day campaign to demolish illegal buildings – which have led to controversial mass evictions of migrants – in the capital.
Whether or not the same move will be made in Tianjin remains to be seen.
