What's New is a recurring column that looks at the new films, music, books and DVD releases in and/or about Chinese mainland

Film: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Harry Potter fans in China, rejoice! This prequel and first in a spinoff franchise of five taking place at various times in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World has scored a rare same day global film release. Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables) stars as the eccentric Newt Scamander who has arrived in 1926 New York just as dark wizarding forces have emerged. Opens nationwide on November 25.

Film: Moana

Moana

In Disney’s 56th animated feature film, Auli’I Cravalho voices Moana Waialkiki, the strong-willed 16 year old daughter of a Polynesian tribe who is chosen to set sail to search for the legendary demigod Maui, voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Opens nationwide on November 25.

Music: Atta Girl: Everyone Loves You When You Were Still A Kid

Ever since they linked up with iconic Guangzhou indie label Full Label on a full-length tribute to UK indie label Sarah Records, Shenzhen based Boring Productions has cultivated a roster steeped in charming lo-fi dreampop. Label boss Jovi teams with the singular named Jonny on this duo named after single by UK indie group Heavenly that specializes in jangly indie-pop. Available from November 24 at Boring Productions’ Bandcamp.

Music: ju ca x Yoshitaka Hikawa - On The Dispersion Of Materiality

Founded by young Shanghai producers interested in “forward-thinking emotive club/bass music,” Genome6.66Mbp   follows last month’s introductory compilation release with this split disc mixing ju ca’s noirish beats with Yoshitaka Hikawa’s dreamy yet discordant soundscapes. Available at Genome6.66 Mbp's Bandcamp.

TV: 2 Broke Girls

2 Broke Girls

Sohu scores the exclusive streaming rights to the fifth season of the sitcom created by stand-up Whitney Cummings and Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City). Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs star as the titular 2 Broke Girls who dream of starting up a cupcake business. While the show has been criticized in America with its portrayal of the Asian character Han Lee, 2 Broke Girls ironically enjoys great success in China where it was one of the first American shows to be streamed in the country. Streamable at Sohu.
