Birthday Beats is a series where we check in with Beijing staples to pre-toast their anniversary.

It's been four years since DADA opened shop in Gulou changing the city's nightlife game. As they celebrate their anniversary on August 27, we chat with founder/owner/DJ Michael Ohlsson about surviving it all.

Congratulations on DADA's anniversary. What birthday plans are in store?
Thanks! For Dada Beijing, it's our four-year bash, and it's going to be me (DJ Ozone) and Morgan (DJ Compact Dicks). Morgan is leaving Beijing so this will be his farewell party as well. We are on a strict diet now, so we can fit into our custom made qipao dresses again. Some other DJs to be named soon. No one gets laid at this one, cause it won't end. One more song!

Taking it back to the beginning, why did you start DADA? Was there one original idea that sparked it off and how did you fine-tune the concept for the opening?
For Beijing, we had been doing events at spaces around town, but needed our own to really do things right. We looked for two years for a location, and just about gave up when we found the right spot.

What have been some of the biggest challenges in operating in Beijing?
Beijing had never had a venue like this, so it took a couple years to convince people. I mean, we hit it great from the start, but mostly with the real in-the-know crowd. But the average customer... it's been a long hard road to get them to understand. We're flying in some of the best recording artists from around the world, and most people don't understand why it's RMB50 at the door. Very frustrating. They have no idea what we did to put this together. But now, they get it, and really appreciate it.

What have been some of the unique benefits that Beijing provides for DADA compared to other cities around the world?
There's a strong, passionate music artist community here and we love that and are honored to be a part of that.

What were some crisis moments you went through with DADA that you can laugh about now?
Every night!

What are DADA’s future plans?
We have an incredible line up for the rest of 2016. Big names, more creative concepts, events five nights a week.
Aug 27, 10pm-late, free entry. DADA.
