The Beijing Museum of Natural History opened its newest exhibition today – the Global Art Exhibition of the Giant Panda, Pandaful Art.

The opening was backed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which aims to raise awareness about the Panda Naming Campaign for UNDP's Animal Ambassadors for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also referred to as Global Goals, eTN.com reports.

The artwork was created by artists from all around the world and focuses on the conservation of pandas, which are an endangered species. The exhibition is currently touring internationally. It was previously in Korea and Hong Kong and will head to Tokyo and Chengdu after its stint in Beijing.

The first Animal Ambassadors for the Global Goals were two twin panda cubs, which were chosen in January. The UNDP also started their global naming campaign at the same time. Twenty-two zoos across 13 countries are participating in the campaign in order to spread the word about SDGs. Participants from around the world can submit a video about their favorite SDG and the winner will get the chance to visit Chengdu and become a 'Panda Champion for the Global Goals,' the article reports.

"Pandas represent the plight of the world's diminishing wildlife in the face of climate change and the loss of natural habitats. But that plight doesn't affect just wildlife like the pandas – both biodiversity and healthy ecosystems are essential for improving and sustaining human wellbeing," said Zhang Wei, Chief Communications Officer for UNDP China at the exhibition opening. "In fact, addressing the loss of biodiversity is one of the SDGs. We hope the pandas will help inspire people to engage with the goals, and raise awareness of UNDP's efforts to promote sustainable development around the world."

UNDP China is currently striving to achieve the goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which aims to protect wildlife and promote sustainable development.
