Here’s our guide to the best live music playing in Beijing this week.

May 13: Ratatat

The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and TV on the Radio may have defined the fertile New York music scene of the early 2000s, but none stood the test of time like Ratatat. While their contemporaries turned the city into a hipster capital, the Brooklyn duo managed to outlast them all through an indie-informed take on electronic music. As part of their China tour, Ratatat is stopping off at Yugong Yishan on Friday night. They will be accompanied by percussion group Gonggonggong.

Fri May 13, 9-11.30pm, RMB120-150. Yugong Yishan, see event listing for details.

May 13: Goose Island Migration Week Block Party

Goose Island Beer is heading to Beijing with a Block Party at Home Plate (in Sanlitun) on Friday night. There’s a great lineup up of China’s hottest bands and DJs, including Re-Tros, Bed Stars, DJ Edmund and DJ Choize. Entrance is free if you RSVP though their WeChat (gooseisland). And if that's not incentive enough, there's going to be lots and lots of beer.

Fri May 13, 9pm-1.30am; Home Plate BBQ (Sanlitun), see event listing for details.

May 13: Rock Against Jams

Rock Against Jams is all about bringing musicians together. So if you’re interested in rocking out this Friday just head to Temple, where you’ll be placed with other musicians to form a new band. Newbie bands will have 90 minutes to practice and then perform in front of a live audience. The best acts of the night not only get mad props, but they get to take home a cash prize.

Fri May 13, 9pm-late. Free entry; Temple, see event listing for details.

May 14: Memphis in May in Beijing BBQ/Music Fest

201605/memphis.jpg

This May is the month to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Tennessee's 'Memphis in May,' a month-long festival celebrating local music and BBQ. And of course Home Plate is bringing the event to Beijing on Saturday. There will be plenty of beer and BBQ, but there will also be some great music. Stevie Mac & The Mac Daddies, Bye Bye Kitty, The Felling Tree, Joey & Elsie, and The Plum Trees are all set to perform.

Sat, May 14, 2pm-2.30am; Home Plate BBQ (Sanlitun), see event listing for details.

May 14: Free Converse Rubber Tracks X School Live Showcase with Penicillin

You might have thought Penicillin was a thing of the past, but the Brit-pop indie rockers are back at School Live on Saturday. Penicillin made a name for themselves back in 2012, when they took over the Beijing music scene and created an enormous fan base all over the Mainland. They were on the road to being the next big thing when they called it quits after their lead singer moved to Manchester in 2014. But he’s now returned to Beijing and the band’s back together. So check them out this Saturday.

Sat May 14, 9.30-midnight. Free entry; School Live House, see event listing for details.
