Here’s our guide to the best live music playing in Beijing this week.
May 5: Derrick Big Walker @ Jianghu Bar
Derrick Roy Michael Walker – better known as Big Walker – is a man of many talents. A prodigy in singing, songwriting, the sax and harmonica, Big Walker will be jamming out at Jianghu Bar on Thursday night. Much like his talent, his style spans the genres, ranging from folk music to blues to rock and roll. The Oklahoma native will be accompanied by The Nightcrawlers.
Thurs May 5, 9pm-12am; RMB70RMB (door) / RMB50 (presale); Jianghu Bar, see event listing for details.
May 5: Kepler, The Beauty, Lost in Space @ School Live Bar
In case you’re itching to hear the latest on Beijing’s local music scene, then head to School Live Bar on Thursday night. They have a whole line up of up and comers, including Kepler (folk), The Beauty (Britpop indie rock) and Lost in Space (hardcore).
Thurs May 5, 9-11.30pm; RMB30 / RMB20 (students); School Live Bar, see event listing for details.
May 6: Chris Boakes Acoustic Show
Chris Boakes is a member of the British indie band, Young Astronaut. But he’s going solo during his upcoming visit to Beijing. He’ll be playing a small acoustic show at The Bookworm on Friday night. The latest Young Astronaut album A Gold Frontier is often compared to Modest Mouse, so we have a feeling Boakes’ solo performance will be pretty damn good.
Fri May 6, 8-9.30pm; Free entry; The Bookworm, see event listing for details.
May 7: Stones Throw 20th Anniversary
Independent US label Stones Throw has put out some of modern hip hop’s most important records during its two-decade history. To celebrate 20 years in the game, founder and all-around hip-hop legend Peanut Butter Wolf heads up a killer lineup for an anniversary tour of Asia that stops in Beijing on Saturday. He’ll be joined by Egyptian Lover, who shows off Stones Throw’s more electro-minded side. But the thing we’re looking forward to most is a special live collaboration between producer Knxwledge and rapper Earl Sweatshirt (pictured) who, alongside the likes of Tyler the Creator and Frank Ocean was a member of influential collective Odd Future.
Sat May 7, 9pm; RMB100 (in advance), RMB150 (door); 751 D-Park, see event listing for details.
May 7: LMT Connection @ Xian
LMT knows how to stand the test of time. The funk group consists of Leroy Emmanuel, Mark Rogers and John Irvine and they have been jamming together for 26 years. In that time they’ve managed to play with many of the greats from Al Green to Marvin Gaye to Gladys Knight. So check them out at their special one-time-only performance at Xian this Saturday night.
Sat May 7, 8-10pm; Xian (East Beijing), see event listing for details.
