Where to celebrate the Fourth of July in Beijing

It’s July 4... and we’re in China.

But fear not, dear patriot. Americans and non-Americans alike are staging events more patriotic than super-size burgers and bad reality TV. While Americans are bound to be the most zealous revelers, we like to think that any drinking holiday, any time, is fair game. So whether you grew up with the barbecues and fireworks, or you’re just looking for a good time, you can bust out your stars and stripes at any of these festivities on the fourth.

Beijing Bikini Cookout

The Americans behind Jing-A are launching their summer seasonal brew, the delicious Beijing Bikini Watermelon Wheat. They’ll also be grilling hamburgers and hotdogs, and if that’s not American enough for you, hosting watermelon-eating contests.

> 11am-5pm; Jing-A Taproom, see listing for details

BBQ Swap Market

What’s a ‘swap market,’ you ask? It’s when your parents stage an MTV-filmed love-life intervention and swap out your boyfriend/girlfriend for a another one! Kidding, but you do get to trade in your unwanted books and DVDs for ones you want. And this being July 4 and all, there’ll be a big bad BBQ, complete with hot dogs, burgers, corn and potato salad. Don’t leave before getting a Rager Pie for dessert.

> 2-7pm; Slow Boat Brewery, see listing for details

Uncle Sam's Other Ball

DDC’s pairing down-home American music with square dancing. This year’s lineup includes the Flying Shaobing Brothers, Ambassadors of Old-Time, Dan Taylor & Heike, The Randy Abel Stable and Soul Pollution.

> 6pm; RMB60 (door), RMB50 (presale); DDC

Free Beer at The Schoolhouse

Think you’re too good for freebies? Well you’re not. The Schoolhouse at Mutianyu is honoring its homeland with a free beer for all U.S. citizens. Just show your American passport.

> 11am-9pm; The Schoolhouse at Mutianyu, see listing for details

Pebbles Courtyard

Sometimes the food Americans miss most about their motherland isn’t American- it’s Mexican. At Pebbles, every second appetizer is half-off, and all the classic margaritas, sangria and Slow Boat beers are buy-one-get-one.

> noon-midnight; Pebbles Courtyard, see listing for details

SNL 40th Anniversary

Looking for something a little less total-booze-fest and a little more chill? Celebrate with America’s favorite iconic comedy show, Saturday Night Live. La-Bas Bar will be playing the show’s 40th Anniversary special, which features Bill Murray, Jim Carrey, Dan Akroyd and more.

> 8pm; La-Bas Bar, see listing for details
