The long-awaited opening of Beijing's new airport is officially set for October 1 of next year. Authorities announced on Wednesday that construction on Beijing Daxing International Airport – the current working title – was entering its final phase a bit ahead of the originally reported schedule.

It was stated that the runway was 92 percent complete while the refueling facilities were nearly 30 percent complete. On New Year’s Eve, construction was finished on the main structure of the terminal buildings leaving only the indoor facilities to be completed. According to China Daily, the airport hopes to wrap up all engineering projects by June next year.

In addition to building work on the airport itself, the local government are also rushing to finish other infrastructure projects, including road and rail connections.

The new airport is situated south of Beijing, between Daxing district and Langfang in Hebei.

With four enormous runways and the ability to house up to 268 planes at one time, the airport will be the largest in the world after construction is complete. At capacity, it will be able to accommodate over 600,000 flights per year.

The super structure will be the main airport for the huge Jing-Jin-Ji region and will hopefully ease congestion and oversubscription to the other international airports in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei.
