March 4: Swinging Beethoven by Quintessence Saxophone Quintet at Suzhou Polygrand Theatre

Swinging Beethoven
Originally from Germany, this five-man contemporary jazz ensemble specializing in saxophone will bring their signature performances of classical and Baroque music from composers like Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart and Handel.

March 4, 11, 18 & 25: Hack Hanzi at Locke Pub

Hack Hanzi
Want to learn Chinese? Suzhou-based teacher Lydia Nordlien will be holding 'Hack Hanzi' workshops and crashcourses throughout the month of March to help you get started or prepare for the HSK. Participate in both the crashcourse and workshop for the complete version, or just take part in the crashcourse to learn what Hanzi is about and how easy it can be. Both classes have plenty of interaction, exercises and other activities and entry fee includes drinks. Note that workshop attendees are required to have previously attended the crashcourse. Hacking Hanzi is suitable for any language level, including beginners and advanced speakers.

It's International Women's Day on March 8, and Hemingway is throwing a special "Ladies on Top" party to celebrate. DJ Koroma will be spinning tunes live starting from 9pm and male dancers will be putting the moves on in a special show. Spring cocktails will be on offer starting from RMB25, while wine and sparkling bottles are available from RMB128. March 10: Irish Night at Locke Pub

As part its "Ireland Month" celebrations ahead of St. Patrick's Day, the Consulate General of Ireland is holding a special themed night at Locke Pub on March 10. March 10: Notes from Northland Concert by SZSO at Suzhou Culture & Arts Center

Opera
Conducted by Julian Kovatchev, an award-winning musician who has worked with various orchestras throughout Europe over the past three decades and now serving as the music director and conductor-in-residence of Daegu Symphony Orchestra in Korea, the SZSO will serenade the audience with music from Russian composers like Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich.

March 11: Suzhou Jinji Lake International Half Marathon

Suzhou Jinji Lake International Half Marathon
The ninth annual Suzhou Jinji Lake International Marathon takes place on March 11. The 21km race course will take runners around Jinji Lake, and both the start and finish lines are at Moon Harbor. Registration to participate is now closed, but you can still head over to the race course to cheer on the thousands of runners this Sunday! Click here for the race route.

March 11: From Mozart to Broadway at Suzhou Culture & Arts Center

Mozart to Broadway
Hailed as 'opera's coolest soprano' by the New York Times, Australian-American singer Danielle de Niese will be performing with the Lucerne Festival Strings — one of the leading European chamber orchestras — to bring a selection of classical masterpieces and Broadway hits to the audience.

March 17: Baking & Dating Event at Danish Baking Shifu (Rainbow Mall)

Single and available? Then here's the event for you! Learn how to bake and get the chance to meet that special someone with this Baking & Dating event at Danish Baking Shifu's new location. Lars Pach, owner of Danish Baking Shifu, will teach you how to make cookies as you mingle with other participants. Entry is RMB65 per person, which includes cookie dough, molds, cream and a chance to use the oven. You'll be able to take your handmade cookies home after the event. March 17: Carmen by Suzhou Ballet Theatre with the SZSO at Suzhou Culture & Arts Center

The Suzhou modern dance troupe's reinterpretation of the 1875 French opera sees the focus of the story being placed on the male protagonist, Don Jose, a naive soldier who's seduced by the title character and throws away his whole life for his newfound love, but ends up killing her in a jealous rage.

March 19: Paul French Presents City of Devils at The Bookworm

Paul French, author of New York Times bestseller Midnight in Peking, is back in town for the Suzhou Bookworm presenting City of Devils, which sees him delves into the colorful history of the Gangs of Old Shanghai.

March 23: InterNations March Event at Hyatt Regency Suzhou

Voice of North America
This joint performance courtesy of Ken Lavigne (formerly of The Canadian Tenors), North Shore Celtic Ensemble, Vancouver Island Choir and American music group Touch of Class features a setlist that covers a variety of musical genres from classic pop and opera to reinterpretations of American and Chinese folk music.
