Chinese netizens were recently tickled by the sight of nine horses galloping along Suzhou’s Zhonghuan Expressway. 'Road' in Chinese, malu, literally translates to 'horse road,' leading to some groan-worthy puns.

“Why can't horses run on the horse roads?” asked one Weibo user, while others commented on how 'handsome' the group looked.

The mini-stampede occurred at around 8pm on the evening of September 5. According to one witness, it was comprised of nine horses in two separate groups, one with five animals and the other with four.

Suzhou traffic police were quickly alerted to the unique equestrian situation. They drove to the scene only to realize that they could do nothing but follow the charging steeds. Before long, though, staff from a nearby ranch got in touch with police, claiming ownership of the escaped horses.

The main section of the highway had to be closed for five minutes while Suzhou traffic police, with the assistance of ranch staff, herded the animals off the road and back towards the ranch.

Fortunately, no traffic accidents resulted from the runaway horses.
