Stricters security checks enforced metro-wide in Shenzhen as of today

Tired of queuing for bag checks each morning in the metro station? Well it's getting worse tomorrow!

From August 15, the government is implementing stricter security checks across Shenzhen's entire metro network, so expect a bag-screening frenzy. To prevent smuggling and the trafficking of illegal substances, police patrols are also being ramped up in stations.

The efficacy of bag-screening without body screening is negligible, and the net effect seems to be to slow people up and cause irritation. The measures in Shenzhen follow recently tightened security in Urumqi, where passengers can no longer carry liquids, and stricter checks in Beijing in May.

Still, it's a good idea to leave for work 10 minutes earlier than normal - hopefully we won't have to endure a similar situation to Beijingers (pictured below).
