Shenzhen shutterbugs, be on the lookout for a sleek new structure joining the Qianhai waterfront in Nanshan in the not-so-distant future. International architectural firm Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) has won the bid to design the Qianhai International Conference and Exchange Center (IFEC) in Shenzhen. The Qianhai special economic zone is an up-and-coming master-planned CBD, which is a stone’s throw away from Hong Kong.

OMA beat out six other international architecture firms to be chosen as the winner of the project. The building will house large-scale conference facilities, a 400-room hotel and an area for public use. OMA envisions the IFEC “will form a beacon for the ships sailing along the 21st century maritime silk road.”
In a press release on OMA’s website, the company stated:
“OMA’s design for IFEC comprises of three distinct volumes: the conference center is shaped into stepped volumes with terraces facing the park. The hotel, towering over the conference center, is a three-dimensional polyhedron and the third volume contains hotel amenities and public program and is oriented to the center of the business district.”
