An estimated more than 10,000 shared bikes are being held in the Huaqiangbei area of Shenzhen, as the bike companies negotiate with authorities for their release.
The bikes were seized after being improperly parked, according to a Southern Metropolis Daily article published yesterday.
The article says Ofo and Mobike are in contact with authorities to secure the return of the bikes, with a proposed solution including the companies paying fines.
The article estimates that about 13,000 shared bikes have been parked behind the Maoye Mall by Huaqiangbei street law enforcement during the month-old operation.
The operation comes in response to bikes clogging subway exits and sidewalks in the area.
The Huaqiangbei pedestrian street is well-policed for shared bikes, forcing riders to drop them off in the surrounding areas, apparently causing a buildup of illegally parked bikes, stashed wherever riders found convenient.
But the 10,000-strong stash of vehicles has raised the ire of neighbors, with Huaqiangbei enforcement also considering transferring the bikes to Futian authorities to be moved to a different part of the city.
On August 24, Shenzhen suspended the addition of new shared bikes to the city and began requiring shared-bike companies meet certain requirements, like moving improperly parked shared bikes within 30 minutes, according to Xinhua.
Bikes not properly parked can be confiscated, according to the new regulations.
Currently, 10 bike companies are operating in Shenzhen, flooding the city with an estimated 890,000 shared bikes.
