This June, a Chinese-language contest for foreigners with the theme 'My Shenzhen Dream' will be held at the closing ceremony of the 15th Shenzhen Social Science Week. Its purpose is to encourage expats in Shenzhen to learn about and better understand China.

Contestants can show off their various Chinese-related skills and further immerse themselves in the culture by participating. They also stand a chance to win prizes, with the top 'champion' slated to receive awards valued at RMB10,000.

The contest will be hosted by the Publicity Department of the Shenzhen CPC Committee as well as the Shenzhen Municipal Federation of Social Science. It is co-organized by the Shenzhen Municipal Foreign Affairs Office, the Shenzhen Bureau of Foreign Expert Affairs (Shenzhen Foreign Employment Management Office) and the School of International Education at Shenzhen University.

Foreigners who live, work and study in Shenzhen are all welcome to join.

How to Apply

1. Registration deadline: June 4, 2017

2. Application methods:

  • E-mail: send your registration Information to 179142564@qq.com

  • WeChat: Add the account 'Shenzhen Mobile Video' (深圳移动视讯) at ID 'sztv_m,' then click 'Register for Chinese contest' (中文大赛报名) to apply.

3. Applicants must be: non-native Chinese speakers, foreign nationals, at least 16 years old and a legal resident in Shenzhen. Love of Chinese language and deep understanding of Chinese culture are optional, but helpful.

  • May 19 - June 4: Application stage (open audition)

  • June 5 - June 22: Selection stage

  • June 23: Finals

(1)Content

Three parts testing knowledge, story and talent

(2)Contest question types

Individual choice questions, quick response questions, interactive expression questions, etc.

(3)Evaluation standards

Mainly scored by expert judges

3. Contest Rewards

(1)Participation Award

All contestants that enter the preliminary round will be rewarded with a souvenir worth 200 yuan. 

(2)Entry Prize

The top 30 contestants that make the entry round will be rewarded with a souvenir and a trophy worth 500 yuan. 

(3)Excellence Award

The top 4 to 10 contestants will get Excellence Awards. They'll each receive a Chinese Learning Incentive Fund and trophy worth 1,000 yuan. 

(4)Individual Award

Given out for 'Most Popular' and 'Best Fashion,' etc. Winners will get certificates and trophies according to netizen votes and on-site performance.

(5)Finalist Award

One champion, one second place winner and one third place winner. Their rewards, respectively, will be Chinese Learning Incentive Funds and trophies worth 10,000 yuan, 5,000 yuan and 3,000 yuan.
