Businesses in Shuiwei were visited by Futian police on Tuesday evening in an anti-smoking exercise that saw two smokers fined RMB50 and venues facilitating smoking warned. Businesses that allow indoor smoking on their premises can be fined up to RMB30,000.
More than a dozen reporters joined the police.
According to a Shenzhen News Network report, several people found smoking in a room informed the police that an ashtray had been provided by the snooker hall.
“Venues that violate the smoking ban will receive a warning if it’s their first offense, and will be fined up to RMB30,000 if they are caught again,” said Lin Yanjun, deputy head of Fuqiang Police Station, according to a Shenzhen Daily report.
The manager at Billiards City claimed patrons were not encouraged to smoke, but police found a price list for cigarettes, which were being sold at the front desk.
The snooker hall was warned and at least one of the smokers fined RMB50, according to the news network report.
Shenzhen's anti-smoking rules were introduced in early 2014, but a 2-year grace period was extended to venues popular with smokers, namely KTVs, bars and massage parlors. That grace period ended on January 1, 2017.
