We're no strangers to the many tricks of unscrupulous taxi drivers (see here and here), but if you noticed a small price hike in the last day or so, it might actually be a legal one. Shenzhen's Development and Reform Commission released a statement yesterday morning that because of rising oil prices, fees for red taxis in the city have gone up by RMB1.
Shenzhen traffic law states that when the price of gas rises, the fuel surcharge for taxis must follow. And on February 14 the price of oil in Guangdong went up incrementally, thus the recent change.
The city's Development and Reform Commission should have released information about the price hike earlier but, according to an employee, there were issues with the website backend and the notice didn't go up until the day the change took effect.
So there you have it: the next time you board a red taxi, be ready to shell out an extra kuai for the ride.
