WATCH: Shenzhen Cab Drivers Caught Ripping Off Customer on Camera

Despite a November crackdown, the green taxis that operate outside of central Shenzhen continue to use rigged-meters to rip off customers.

A video investigation, carried by multiple outlets, shows two separate green taxi drivers charging an undercover reporter about twice the regular fare.

The video shows the reporter get a taxi at Bao'an International Airport and ask to be taken to the Xixiang People's Hospital, a trip that should cost around RMB30 according to Baidu Maps. The reporter was charged RMB64.8 and handed a receipt displaying a distance much farther than was traveled.

A second ride from the hospital back to the airport also saw a green taxi overcharge the reporter, this time with a fare of RMB66. A separate ride between the two places in an electric taxi cost only RMB37.6, despite stopping at lights and waiting in traffic.

The reporter filed complaints against the two taxi cabs with the city's transport commission and was told they would be handled within 10 days.

It appears to be a pattern of green taxi cab drivers targeting people unlikely to remain in Shenzhen for long and thereby unlikely to file complaints.

Taxi drivers have complained of dropping wages since ride-hailing apps became popular.
