What's New is a recurring column that looks at the new films, music, books and DVD releases in and/or about Chinese mainland

Sports: NFL Game Pass

NFL Game Pass

The NFL is slowly making inroads within China, thanks to numerous streaming deals with PPTV, QQ, Sina SportsAli Sports (Youku), iQiyi, BesTV and LeSports that air select primetime games live with Chinese commentary. With Peyton Manning retired, it seems unlikely that the Denver Broncos will repeat as Super Bowl champions. However, can Cam Newton avenge last year's Super Bowl loss while permanently icing the dab? Catch the drama when the season kicks off on September 9, with all the games available in China on NFL Game Pass for RMB1,329 or four payments of RMB399 per month.

Sports: UFC 203

Sports: UFC 203

It's going to be a tall order to top the recent classic battle between Connor McGregor and Nate Diaz but expect Cleveland to be rocking as it welcomes hometown hero, UFC Heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic. He defends the title against former Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem. The bill also marks the UFC debut of former WWE wrestler CM Punk and a rematch to the 2014 battle between heavyweights Fabricio Werdum and Travis Browne. Exclusively live streamed at PPTV Sports on Sep 11 and for UFC 202, we managed to find a live English language stream.

Music: The Cheers Cheers - Carinae

Shenzhen-based indie label Boring Productions continues its busy summer with this relese from City Flanker's frontman Wang Xiaoyu. On the mellower end of the 80s-90s dreampop style that the label specializes in, Carinae is also available in limited-edition cassette form and a CD version containing a board game the label put together. Available at Boring Production's Bandcamp.

Music: Electric Lady - Queen of Electricity and Her Coming Kingdom

With a name that references a classic Jimi Hendrix album, the young Beijing rockers specialize in old-school fuzzy classic rock. Their debut disc will warm the heart of fans of 70s psych rock and stoner jams. Available at Electric Lady’s Bandcamp.

Film: Black Sea

Film: Black Sea

Jude Law stars as a down on his luck under-sea salvage captain who takes on a risky mission to pinpoint a World War II U-Boat that contains millions of gold. He leads a mixed British and Russian crew with tensions inevitably rising between the two camps throughout the film. Released in England in 2014, it finally makes it way to Mainland theaters. Opens nationwide on Sep 9.

Film: Nine Lives

Nine Lives

This English-language French comedy may have received the unfortunate Rotten Tomatoes review of ‘not meow, not ever,’ but might be worth a watch just to see feline Kevin Spacey. The Academy Award winning actor stars as an icy businessman who after an accident, finds himself trapped inside the body of a cat he purchased as a last-minute gift for his estranged daughter. To avoid this permanent fate, Spacey must make things right with his family in one week. Opens nationwide on Sep 9.
