Shenzhen has seen some pretty bad traffic incidents lately, but even then, a drunk driver hitting upwards of 10 cars on his or her way home seems a bit excessive.

Police were first alerted to the incident late at night on August 21, when the traffic police brigade in Longgang District suddenly started getting flooded with calls. From 11.51pm to 12.02am, at a rate of roughly one per minute, they received 10 reports of a black Audi sedan creating havoc from Jihua Lanhua Intersection, to Longyuan Intersection, to Shuijing Cun Wei Intersection.

Tallying up the score later, police found that the single Audi had hit or crashed into a grand total of 13 cars on its wayward route, although luckily no one was injured.

The Buji detachment of traffic police quickly began trying to track down the car, but it was easier said than done. From the descriptions of various victims and eyewitnesses, they deduced the car was a Q7 model of Audi, but they still lacked a license plate number. It was only after requesting and compiling information from other police stations that they singled out B3UB45 as the most likely candidate.

Afterwards, making use of Shenzhen's widespread "eye in the sky" surveillance system and past security camera footage to guess the path of the car, they found it had already entered the Shangpin Yayuan Residential Area in Buji.

By 2.34am on the August 22, around two and a half hours since the first reports, the Buji police were able to track down the car to its parking spot in a residential area. After gaining the cooperation of the property's management, they also caught the suspect, whose last name is Zhao, and brought him or her back to the station.

A breathalyzer test showed that Zhao still had a blood alcohol level of 110mg/ml hours after driving. A result in the 90-250mg range is known to produce effects of "emotional instability" and "loss of critical judgment," so no surprises there.

An investigator for the case has said that the driver is currently in detention and awaiting court judgment.
