What originally looked to be an exclusive, Google-sponsored event, was opened to the public yesterday – you now can buy tickets to the 'Fab 12 ' symposium.
Tickets to the ‘Fab 12 ’ symposium have recently been made available for USD159.
The August 12 symposium’s 23 speakers will address everything from synthetic life to ‘Shanzhai as design.’
The symposium is part of the first Fab Foundation conference hosted in China and is bringing together people from Fab Labs from all over the world.
Think of Fab Labs as the grandfather to maker spaces, operating in countries ranging from the United States to Afghanistan for more than a decade. Fab Labs follow a charter and are free to use or can be used after bartering services, with about 670 operating across the world, according to fablabs.io.
Sherry Lassiter, head of the Boston-based Fab Foundation, spoke with That’s on Monday about why Shenzhen was chosen to host the Fab 12.
“It used to be that everyone was tinkering, but at this point now you have very sophisticated makers who are interested in creating economic opportunity,” she said.
In other words, some makers also want to make money – and Shenzhen is a good starting point.
“You have a whole city that's in the service of that kind of innovation and enterprise,” she said. “From idea to large scale manufacturing and figuring out the business plan.”
The daylong symposium is for “people who are interested in making, the world, manufacturing – we pretty much run the full arc here,” according to Lassiter.
“Dot org, dot com, dot edu are the three thrusts,” she said.
There will also be a free Fab Lab event open to the public held at the Shenzhen Civic Center August 12 to August 14 with hands-on activities.
The Fab Foundation is closely associated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
“At MIT we are looking at the future roadmap of manufacturing,” Lassiter said.
