The impending arrival of typhoon Nida has spooked a portion of Guangzhou’s residents into emptying city supermarkets from Tianhe to Panyu District.
Below is a selection of images we rounded up from social media that shows Guangzhou bakeries, supermarkets and vegetable stands left as bare as Janet Jackson’s breast at her infamous Super Bowl 2004 performance.
Admittedly, this won’t be our most engaging photo roundup, but what the hell – we’ve done it anyway.
Shenzhen shelves seem to have faired better (for one, we have no photos...), many untouched by hordes of panic buyers like in Guangzhou. The Futian Renren Le on Jintian Lu was operating normally, sans its usual stock of veggies as of 7pm.
"A few more people than usual have bought foodstuffs," said store-owner Mrs. Chen while sitting across from an almost fully stocked shelf of chips.
Drivers, on the other hand, were feeling the typhoon’s pinch.
A Shenzhen e-bike taxi driver identifying himself as Old Wang said the typhoon was hitting him in the pocket.
“Tonight, business is really bad, no prostitutes are getting rides," said Mr. Wang, who usually escorts women from the Fumin Lu and Yitian Lu intersection.
Typhoon Nida is expected to hit the PRD tonight or tomorrow (August 2) and may unleash gusts up to 155 kilometers per hour.
