This summer, from July 22 to August 21, Sin Sin Fine Art in Hong Kong will present Assembling, an exhibition co-curated by Shenzhen-based artist Bronwen Shelwell.
Bringing together five artists of different cultural backgrounds, Assembling will feature a variety of works that complement and connect with one another, including ceramics, glass, installations, multimedia, paintings and dance. Each artist will present their own perspective while sharing the coincidental opportunity that brought them together.
An opening reception will be held on Friday, July 22 from 6.30 to 8.30pm and will feature a performance by Spanish contemporary dancer Beatriz Abad Latorre. On Saturday, July 23, the artists will gather at 54 Sai Street in Central from 3-5pm to discuss the topic 'Why Shenzhen?' and explore how the city has impacted their work.

Bronwen Shelwell of South Africa
Living in Shenzhen since 2011, Shelwell first found her passion for glass in southern China.
“I want to explore the properties of glass," she explains. "I love how it can change its state, from liquid to solid, and can be broken and fused, and then assembled once again. In my work, I want to show the fractal and fluid nature of glass and how it is suspended, infinitely, in those states. A process of adding and subtracting until the final work reveals itself.”
Marco Flagg of the United States
A Shenzhen native since 2009, Flagg is a multimedia artist and documentary filmmaker whose passion is social sculpture and the intricacies of linguistics. His current work, entitled ‘Emergence,’ conducts a detailed study of the exchange of ideas between artists to investigate the necessary communication that influences the creative process. His final work gives viewers a visual and sonic representation of the artists’ emergent creative decisions.
Tom Hayes of the United Kingdom
Hayes first came to Shenzhen in 2012 on a residency invitation to Da Wang Culture Highland. He specializes in ceramics and painting and has spent much time travelling around China researching such fields. His work relates to our common detachment from nature, and our current turning point in history where attitudes are changing and technology is offering a new route for humankind. Materials and processes are an important element of his work, as he experiments with context and matter through curiosity and playfulness.
Zhang Kaiqin of Yunnan, China
Zhang came to Shenzhen in early 2010 to help develop the Shenzhen Community Art Center and has since travelled abroad extensively on art residencies. Zhang feels that art connects her with people and cultures and has expanded her worldview. Zhang experiments with a variety of media, though painting is the most sincere form of her self-expression. She creates her paintings in a way similar to calligraphy, balancing the shapes, colors and spaces to complement each other naturally.
Beatriz Abad Latorre of Spain
Living in Shenzhen since 2014, Abad is a hip-hop dancer with contemporary influences whose passion for dance started when she was a child. Dance has taken Abad around the world, where she has met and performed with a variety of choreographers and styles. On the opening night, Abad will perform at the gallery, connecting and engaging with the artwork, projections and audience.
