OCT Bay’s Live K Bar aims to outshine other karaoke bars because they have, well, standards. As manager Ouyang Peng says, “Almost every bar is about having drinks and music. Besides for that, this bar gives you a chance to be a star.”

If patrons want to achieve stardom, they have to take a karaoke test first. Lining the back of the bar are several large clear tubes with a screen and headphones in each. The first round begins here, with customers singing into the tube’s microphones to receive scores. A score of 70% or more means they’ve made it to the stage round in the center of the bar.

On weekends, the a singing contest with those customers who make it to the stage vying for the chance to win the grand prize of a RMB4000 voucher for a ticket to Yunnan.

During the day, Live K becomes a café serving Taiwanese food and guo quio mi xian—a specialty Yunnan noodle dish for RMB48-88. At night, the focus turns to drinks with the only two cocktails on the menu named in English, the Live K Crush and QQ Girl (both RMB30). The Crush has a slight orange flavour with a milky texture and the QQ girl is the equivalent of a York Peppermint Patty injected with gin and having the appearance of a mini electric storm brewing in a glass.

The staff don’t speak English, but then again, stardom usually comes with a little adversity.
