The Nanshan District’s government has released an ambitious plan to turn the district into a drone development and manufacturing hub, according to a report by Shenzhen Daily. The announcement was delivered via a government work report delivered by the head of Nanshan District, Wang Qiang.
The bold decision has a strong base in numbers – seven out of 10 drones in the world are manufactured in China, most of them in Shenzhen. The city is also home to the world’s top UAV maker – DJ – the company behind the top selling consumer drone Phantom 3 (“the best drone you can buy right now” according to The Verge magazine). The manufacturer holds an impressive 70 percent of the international UAV market.
Other UAV giants, including AEE Aviation Technology (the only company involved in drafting drone industrial standards with the Ministry of Public Security) and Smart Drone (a former aircraft model company turned drone maker) have also chosen Shenzhen as their preferred takeoff location.
Interestingly enough, all of the mentioned companies are practically neighbors, having based their offices in Nanshan. In fact, the district is home to a whopping 200 drone companies – more than enough to make the area the world’s first and biggest UAV hub. The high concentration of drone makers in the area is not at all that surprising. Lots of electronics and engineering companies are based in the district’s High Tech Park – and with over 2,000 electronic pieces needed to build one drone, it appears most companies choose to be within walking (or flying) distance of the source.
