New Restaurant: Geek Zone

Geek Zone, the preferred hangout of Best Buy’s Geek Squad has set up shop over in Coastal Rose Garden. Just kidding, but honestly, we wouldn’t be surprised to find tech-savvy customers, entrepreneurs, inventers and other big brains seated at one of the many small circular tables clustered throughout the shop, sipping cappuccinos while talking marketing options.

With moderately priced menu items of average quality, Geek Zone will most likely flourish in Shekou – but not because of their food or coffee. The space’s strong suit is its networking function, linking potential investors and startups, as well as soon-to-be-available legal consultations for businesses.

“We want to help young entrepreneurs to build up their own kingdoms,” William Tao, one of the venue’s owners, says of the cafe’s concept. Geek Zone also mildly caters to education with a built-in bookcase spanning the length of one wall, containing publications in both English and Chinese. Titles range from economics to fiction.

Food spans from typical Asian coffeehouse options, like the chocolate waffle (RMB35) with vanilla ice cream (RMB8), to more specialty items, like the British-style pastry chicken pie (RMB25). The former is not particularly good or bad, just standard bready chocolate with some whipped cream and chocolate sauce, while the latter could serve as a snack or possibly small lunch when combined with another menu item.

The extreme pizza.

Also on offer is the “extreme” pizza (RMB75) with lots of meat and cheese on a medium-sized crust – but again, the dish tastes neither good nor bad, just average.

Notable qualities include efficient staff, outdoor seating, a comfortable couch and a midnight closing time. If you want to exchange name cards with fellow patrons and chat potential big business, come here. Just don’t expect to be overwhelmed by the food.

Price: Approx. RMB35-70

Who’s going: Young entrepreneurs, IT workers, workaholics

Good for: Startups in need of investment, business advice, networking
