Hiroshi Watanabe is one of the most fascinating artists working in electronic music today. He’s a man whose skills are truly polymathic, a classically trained jazz musician in the techno world. He simultaneously nails the essence of science-fictional, Detroit-techno futurism; the experimental house and techno vibe of Berlin culture as well as being a much admired producer in the euphoric and progressive house world. It is rare beyond belief for one man to transcend sub-genres as neatly as he does.
All this and he’s still one of the nicest chaps you could meet with a humility and modesty that belies his mesmeric talent.
So says Karim Sahraoui, who so energised the Detroit techno community with the ‘Eternal Life EP’ that put not only him but also Derrick May’s iconic Transmat label back on track after two years of silence from the label.
