Shanghai's Best Terraces 2015: Formal restaurants

We've told you where to go for a casual coffee or bite of lunch in the sunshine, but there's no reason meals of a higher status need be confined to inside. 

Here's a bunch of our new discoveries as well as more classic Shanghai terraces to eat for dinner and more formal occasions in 2015

elEfante
Local chef célèbre Willy Trullas’ Donghu Lu restaurant is a mainstay of rich, great quality Spanish food in Shanghai. Set in a Concession-era villa, the parasol-dotted patio is a great spot to drink their house sangria.

Franck
Although not known for its outside terrace space, the city’s most celebrated French bistro is set in a beautiful enclave off Wukang Lu with a couple of outdoor seats. If these are taken, try Coffee Tree next door.

Coconut Paradise
Another Shanghai mainstay in a renovated villa, the gorgeous tree-lined garden feels truly tropical in the evening and compliments a menu of classic Thai dishes.

Fifty 8o Grill
Headed up by the exceptionally capable Jason Oakley, the Mandarin Oriental Pudong’s flagship steakhouse is a consistently excellent choice for special occasions. Don’t expect it to be cheap, but do wear stretchy clothing.

Light & Salt
This chic bistro at Rockbund benefits from a charming rooftop terrace with some fantastic views. Go for cocktails at their hidden bar in the evening, or the excellent weekend brunch.

Sir Elly’s
Shanghai’s resident ‘one percenter’ restaurant has a magnificent terrace with unparalleled views of the Bund and Pudong. Impress hot dates, out of town guests and clients with the fabulously old school cocktails.

Hong Qiao State Guest Hotel

Morton’s
One of the city’s best loved happy hours (RMB45 martinis and free steak sandwiches, anyone?) Morton’s IFC branch has, well, branched out to the roof, which is huge.

Table No.1
Slightly out of the way but well worth the trip, Jason Atherton’s other Shanghai concept is similarly consistent in quality, headed up by Tennessee-born chef Christopher Pitts. Try the crispy pig’s ears and beef brisket.

M on the Bund
No list of the city’s best terraces would be complete without a mention of the oldest Bund restaurant. Classy but not overpriced (the lunch set is under RMB200) M on the Bund is the full package. Make sure you try the pavlova.

POP
Brand new at Three on the Bund, this so-called ‘American brasserie’ is headed by David Chaveau, previously of The Peninsula. He damn well knows what’s up when it comes to the kitchen, and serves contemporary dishes alongside a spectacular Pudong skyline.

Villa le Bec
This splendid renovated Concession-era villa has been home to chef Nicolas Le Bec’s restaurant since 2013. Serving French regional bistro classics, the villa benefits from a romantic patio in front and a landscaped be-fountained garden in the back.

Best Shanghai Terraces 2015 restaurants

El Patio
Very decent Spanish food from the atmospheric courtyard of a converted villa, this place frequently has live music, and sports a cocktail bar upstairs for after dinner.

Ubuka
Another new Shanghai Centre addition, this classy sushi spot has a chic patio in front. Happy hour from 2-6pm: any two drinks for RMB70.

Hai by GoGa
Veteran Shanghai chef Brad Turley’s sophomore restaurant benefits from both indoor and outdoor tables on the rooftop of the Shanghai Education Hotel. Excellent choice for contemporary Californian cuisine.
