It might look like a teensy Yongkang Lu bistro from the outside, but inside, Gilligan’s pub is packing heat. Split over two layers of an old school Shanghai shop house, this little watering hole can fit about 60 at maximum capacity. With IPA craft beers on tap and NBA basketball on the TV, it strikes as a low-key, laddish hangout spot.
But there’s more to it than that. Gilligan’s also hosts a weekly poetry session for any would-be bards in Shanghai (Sundays, 7pm) along with a surprising menu of Sichuan food. We’ve long held suspicions that the marriage of beer and the heavy, flaming heat of Sichuan dishes would be a happy one – even the staunchest renouncers of the numbing peppers have been known to munch on those spicy peanuts that come along free when you drink at Yongkang Lu bars.
For the more conventional pub dweller, Gilligan’s also stocks Tuck Shop Pies for RMB55 (more those at www.tuckshoppies.com) and on Sundays hosts a hog roast: 250g bbq pork, Yorkshire pudding, baked potato and vegetables for RMB65. Beers start at RMB35 for Asahi, and round off at RMB60 for Brew Dog punk IPA. Cocktails come in at RMB55, with ‘real’ (imported) Red Bull and vodka for RMB40. That plus poetry night certainly sounds like a dangerous combination…
Price: RMB35 for beer and wine (daily happy hour 2-8pm)
