One of our favorite restaurants in Shanghai, the oft-overlooked Unico has released a new ‘Menu 3.0.’ Just like owner Mauro Colagreco’s two-star Michelin restaurant in France, food at Unico is produce-led and fabulous for it. Damn near perfect grilled Argentinian steaks from RMB278 (a nod to Colagreco’s homeland) and vegetables quite honestly flavorsome enough to be a stand-alone dish. They’re grown on Unico’s private organic garden out of town.
Risotto with yoghurt and truffle RMB68
Scallop and lime yoghurt, osciestra caviar and seaweed (from RMB348 three-course set)
Fresh anchovy "pissaladière" RMB98
Argentinean ribeye steak, 450g, RMB378 for two people.
Argentinean prawn with lemon and olive oil RMB148
Desserts too are an exercise in classic execution. Traditional to the T, former Mr & Mrs Bund executive chef Franck Salati’s classical training rings through, especially with the giant mille-feuille Napoléon (RMB88) and flan casero with salted dulce de leche (RMB58). When it arrived, the alfajor (bottom) looked like it was going to be a heavy, creamy stodge-fest, but it actually turned out to be totally dairy free. Yup, that meringue-like substance is in fact made from coconut milk; surprisingly light and fluffy.
Flan casero with salted caramel dulce de leche RMB58
Giant mille-fuilles Napoléon RMB88
Alfajor, dulce de leche, biscuit and coconut, from RMB348 set
Every month, Unico has a monthly three-course set menu for RMB348. That gets you one starter, main and dessert plus a side dish. The menu changes every month, and includes a number of other promotions too.
