Back for its seventh year, the JUE Festival will be a true assault on the senses. Here's the full breakdown:
‘Almost Famous’ Shanghai Live Photographer Exhibition

JUE is celebrating 25 years since the birth of Shanghai rock and roll. Six notable photographers will be showcasing images they’ve captured at the increasing number of festivals and gigs to take over the city.

JUE Live Photography Workshop
Ever wondered how to take live concert photos like a pro? Independent photographer Luan Dong leads a pair of workshops full of practical advice and hands-on tips. Space is limited to 20 participants and those taking part will also act as JUE’s exclusive photographers. Workshop in Mandarin only.

Boris

Over 19 albums, Japanese experimental rockers Boris have garnered a global following and Album of the Year honors from Spin and Blender for 2005's Pink. Famed for their nine amplifier set-up, last year's Noise shows that the trio haven't slowed down. They'll be making their long awaited Mainland debut with this show.

Logos x Forma

Wooozy Offline returns with a party featuring dueling headliners. Logos has been tearing up the London underground with his hypnotic furutistic take on grime. He founded the Different Circles label with Mumdance and the two are working on a full-length compilation of club-focused tracks. Forma (pictured above) has been a standout in the international sythn scene with releases like OFF/ON and Cool Haptics EP. The trio are celebrated for their improvisational live shows that expertly straddles club-friendly techno and rock-ish noise. Microlab, Evan, Jackie and Sleepless will support.

JUE Film Day
Three films exploring new wave and the concurrent emergence of Chinese rock music will be screened at the Power Station of Art. Wham! In China, Foreign Skies documents the landmark China tour by the 80s pop duo while Christiane F. – We Children from Bahnhof Zoo examines the impact of David Bowie on West Berlin youth. Last year’s The Stuart Hall Project has its first Mainland public screening, celebrating the wellknown British cultural theorist. Music scholars including Second Hand Rose drummer Jeroen
Groenwegen-Lau will take part in a panel discussion from 5-6pm.

SLATE x Pan Daijing Contemporary Dance Event
SLATE Contemporary dance company teams up with sound artist Pan Daijing for a multi-media performance with Carmen Ho curating the night’s visuals. The show will explore themes of dreams and the personal past in what promises to be one of the festival’s most unique shows.

Wooozy New Sounds Showcase

While JUE may best be known for bringing underground international stalwarts for rare shows in Shanghai, they’ve curated this showcase celebrating some of the country’s best new groups. Headlining is the excellent futuristic psychedelic rock group Nonplus of Color, who have been turning heads since forming a year ago. Ningbo post-punk group Polyfauna, shoegazers Silent Sea and Shanghai’s Undress for Success rounds out the bill.

Cian O’Donnell
Lost Cargo presents a night of eclectic sounds headlined by the New Zealand favorite. Since moving to Aukland from the UK, O’Donnell has been a force in the country’s underground dance scene as a DJ, promoter and shop owner. He’ll be spinning an all-vinyl set with support from Aivilox, Howell and Santo Chino.

Bike to JUE
Anyone with a bike and the ability to post photos on social media is invited to join this weekend-long photo scavenger hunt. Choose between two routes and start riding across the city to take photos at designated JUE checkpoints. Points will be awarded for creative photos and the number of checkpoints reached. Top prizes are an RMB5,000 valued bike from Factory 5 or a free pass to all of the upcoming Splitworks-organized shows for the year. Closing party goes down at the Factory 5 store on March 19 from 8-10pm.

JUE Youth Day 2015 | Pushing Boundaries
Youth will be served in this single day event that provides a platform for creative kinds aspiring to pave their own path in the cultural fields. Six outstanding leaders in their field will share their experiences in a day of talks featuring world solo bike traveler Ivan Xu, celebrated author Zhang Jiajing and Eardrum co-founder and chief editor Jive Lai. There will also be a series of workshops such as one explaining how to make your own high-quality DIY earbuds led by Xinchejian. K11: ‘Cinematheque’ Cheng Ran and Chen-Wei Duo Exhibit
This exhibition combines Cheng Ran’s recent video and installation works with Chen Wei’s photographs accompanied by a movie set installation. The show explores the impact of movies and underground music on a new generation of Chinese youth.

JUE | Talks – Community
It takes a community to build a thriving arts scene and this panel explores the state of China’s community spirit within the context of a greater global scene. Primitive Calculators’ frontman Stuart Grant, Awesome Tapes from Africa mastermind Brian Shimkovitz and Aukland based DJ Cian O’Donnell will join Zoomin’ organizer/Beijing institution Zhu Wenbo in this discussion. Pick up your tickets early and enjoy free entry to Awesome Tapes from Africa’s show which follows afterwards.

While on a research trip in the Congo, Brian Shimkovitz started amassing an awe-inspiring cassette collection of the continent’s music from rhumba to tsongo disco to Ethio-soul and everything in between. What started in 2006 as a blog has turned into a full-fledged label that has connected artists like Hailu Mergia to a global audience through vinyl re-issues. It’s also turned into a constant party, with Shimkovitz rocking a twin-cassette tape deck for sets that blend folkloric pop, hip hop beats and leftfield dancefloor gems.

DADA Creative Hang Out
JUE teams up with Creative Collective’s Sandy Chu for this popular independent marketplace showcasing the creativity of Shanghai’s craft makers and designers. Pop-up food stalls will be on site.

Jay Electronica

Hip hop’s man of mystery still hasn’t released a full-length album since taking over the Internet eight years ago. Yet, the New Orleans rhymer has all the bona fides – a deal with Jay Z’s Roc Nation, a co-sign from P Diddy, beats from Just Blaze, a baby with Erykah Badu – and, as of 2014, his first original song in three years. Classics like ‘Exhibit A’ guarantee this show will be packed with hip hop heads. Joining in on the fun is Miss Ko. The Queens-born performer has taken over Taiwan’s rap scene, scoring a coveted Golden Melody Award and receiving praise from Wang Leehom and Run DMC.

Emilie Simon

Over a dozen years, Emilie Simon has crafted a reputation for experimental pop in the vein of Kate Bush and Björk. The three time Victoires de la Musique winner is best known for recording the original soundtrack for La Marche de l’Empereur (March of the Penguins).

Force Analysis Theatre 1.0, a multimedia musical
Hangzhou based group Spice shows off their latest conceptual short film project that’s inspired by the working process seen in Pink Floyd’s The Wall.

Primitive Calculators

One of Australia’s original punk acts has arisen after a 35 year hiatus and they’re meaner than ever. With a sound that conjures up Suicide and New York’s no wave scene, Primitive Calculators only released a few EPs and a live album in a glorious two year run. However, their influence in the country’s music scene remained for decades before the group’s reformation in 2009 for the inaugural Australian All Tomorrow’s Parties music festival, curated by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. They remain mad as ever on their 2013 disc The World is Fucked. They’ll be supported by the influential Beijing electronic indie group Snapline and Brooklyn trio Sontag Shogun.

Swindle

Rankadank Records teams up with the JUE Festival to bring over the UK grime producer. Swindle has a stacked resume with releases on respected labels like Butterz and collaborations with Wiley and Big Narstie. He’s making his Mainland debut joined by Shanghai favorite Conrank and his talented Electric East stable of Zean, Q-Kraft and Misloop. Perfect for people that’s all about that bass.

JUE x K11 Present: Mapping Shanghai, Music Edition
Shanghai based photographer and researcher Liz Hingley’s lecture and workshop series expands the term ‘mapping’ from its geographical connotations and applies different research methodologies to explore the multilayered city that is Shanghai. This edition explores Shanghai’s underground music identities and discusses the pivotal role that spaces and places have in the scene.

The Bug & Manga

British bass lord Kevin Martin is bringing his main mutation back to China. With bass-booming remixes for everyone from Grace Jones to Thom Yorke to Beastie Boys, The Bug has worked with legendary labels like Grand Royal, Ninja Tune and Hyperdub. He released his debut full-length Angels & Devils last year and will be joined by Manga. The veteran grime emcee reps for the legendary Roll Deep crew and is responsible for genre highlights like his 2007 silver-selling debut album In At the Deep End.

Documentarian Lance Bangs follows the elusive and influential rock band Slint, who in just two albums helped pioneer the post-rock genre. Bangs reveals the group’s secret history while paying tribute to the Kentucky group’s enduring legacy.
