Town Crier! is random snippets of Shanghai news that just may have an effect on your life...

Yes, we are sure other airports have been doing this for a while now. For the first time aircraft will be allowed to land and take off simultaneously at Pudong International Airport, dramatically reducing waiting times for departing and arriving flights, reports Shanghai Daily.

Numbers-wise, it means that 85 planes can now take off and land per hour instead of the current 65 said Lu Wen, an air traffic controller at the airport. This is around a 30 percent rise in overall aircraft traffic.

In the past, aircraft have been kept at least 2 kilometers away from the plane ahead on the two parallel runways. Under the new system, the aircraft can take off or land “shoulder to shoulder.” This will also mean shorter circling time in the air before landing.

The air traffic controllers also need to stay calm and show strong mental character and judgement, said Chen Wei, another controller. Man, we hope those guys are up to it!
