Three men are being held after intimidating a motorist into buying a "tiger paw" at a Shanghai market in Songjiang District, a week after new legislation clearly defined that eating endangered wild animals or buying them for other purposes, is illegal. .
The gang approached the man, surnamed Yang, as he parked his car on April 18, telling him to buy the paw for 200 yuan ($32) per gram. Yang paid 6,000 yuan ($960) for the body part used in traditional Chinese medicine under fear of being attacked.
Luckily police caught the trio as they were taking the cash and preparing to flee the scene. According to Songjiang authorities, several similar reports have already been received this year, most occurring in crowded places and targeting individuals who were walking alone.
