An unlicensed female doctor, surnamed Fang, was sentenced to eight months in prison this week by a Shanghai court for performing a sex-selective abortion.

According to prosecutors, Fang set up a clinic in her apartment in March 2012. She provided ultrasounds to pregnant mothers who wanted to know the gender of their foetus and helped the women abort the pregnancy if they were unhappy with the gender. Sex-selective abortion is illegal in China.

According to court documents, Fang was paid 590 yuan ($97) for an abortion she carried out in June 2012. Police and local health authorities raided Fang's clinic and arrested her as she was performing an ultrasound scan on a pregnant woman on August 23, 2012.

A court official, surnamed Gao, told Shanghai Daily that it is unknown just how many sex-selective abortions Fang carried out before she was arrested.

In 2013, 25 people in Anhui province were jailed or put under surveillance for administering illegal gender tests and sex-selective abortions.
