May 29: Manuel Valera Trio Live in Shanghai

Based in New York City, Grammy-nominated artist, pianist and composer Manuel Valera was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. Since arriving in New York, he has become well-known in the city’s modern jazz scene, garnering national reviews and lending his talents as a pianist and composer to such notable artists as Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D'Rivera, Brian Lynch among many others.

May 29: Alexandro Querevalu: The Last of the Mohicans

Inspired by The Last of the Mohicans, the Shanghai Theater Center presents Alexandro Querevalú as he performs his own musical rendition of the film's score, originally composed by Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman. The Poland-based Peruvian musician has mastered a wide variety of traditional Andean wind instruments.

May 30: Screening of Journey: Improvised – Damo Suzuki’s China Tour And Beyond

Subtropical Asia present this screening of their documentary following legendary former Can singer Damo Suzuki on his first-ever China tour in 2018. After the screening, experimental rockers Hei Mu and Dee will perform for revellers at Yuyintang Park.

May 30: Foster Parents/21 Grams

Math rockers Foster Parents join up with veteran Shanghai post-rockers 21 Grams this week for a special Thursday evening show. Foster Parents’ Grim still lives strong in the minds of those who have heard it, while the band have also made a number of appearances on compilations by labels like Qiii Snacks Records et al. 21 Grams cinematic preoccupation has seen them name their band after a Alejandro Inarritu film, with songs entitled ‘Brokeback Mountain’ and ‘Vanilla Sky.’

May 31: Yuksek Live in Shanghai

Bar Rouge Shanghai welcomes multi-faceted French DJ/Producer Yuksek who will play a set of his unique sounds for clubbers this week. Expect an uncompromising combination of pop, disco and electro music blended together for the club.

May 31: Double Down Party

A bunch of local favorites take to the stage at Yuyintang this weekend for what we can only imagine will be a boozy, heady affair. Join the folks in Round Eye, Parachutes on Fire, The Flood and Hogchoker as they attempt to choke all the fresh air out of the room this Friday and turn the space into a sweaty mess.

Jun 1: Marc Melia Live in Shanghai

Majorca-born musician Marc Melia arrives in China with his first-ever solo album, Music for Prophet, which sees him make use of repetitive looping beats made on gorgeous spacy synthesizers, ostensibly aimed at robot ears. In the works for around five years, Melia made the album on a Prophet synth and accompanied it with an awesome 43-minute video of a cassette tape of Music for Prophet flying into space.

Jun 2: Sainkho Kosmos Live in Shanghai

Tuva, a Russian autonomous republic that lies to the North of Mongolia, has maintained its fascinating traditional culture and arts, taking in influences from Siberia, Turkic countries to the West, Mongolian and Chinese influences to the South. Sainkho Kosmos, a musician from Tuva, is famed for her incredible throat-singing, while her music also employs aspects of jazz, electronica and more modern compositional methods.
