May 29: Manuel Valera Trio Live in Shanghai

Based in New York City, Grammy nominated artist, pianist and composer Manuel Valera was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. Since arriving in New York, he has become well known in the city’s modern jazz scene, garnering national reviews and lending his talents as a pianist and composer to such notable artists as Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D'Rivera, Brian Lynch among many others.

May 29: Alexandro Querevalu: The Last of the Mohicans

Inspired by The Last of the Mohicans, the Shanghai Theater Center presents Alexandro Querevalú as he performs his own musical rendition of the film's score, originally composed by Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman. The Poland-based Peruvian musician has mastered a wide variety of traditional Andean wind instruments, including the quena, quenacho, antara, basto zampoña, malta zampoña and more.

May 30: Screening of Journey: Improvised – Damo Suzuki’s China Tour And Beyond

Subtropical Asia present this screening of their documentary following legendary former Can singer Damo Suzuki on his first-ever China tour in 2018. After the screening, experimental rockers Hei Mu and Dee will perform for revellers at Yuyintang Park.

May 30-Jun 2: The Cat Who Wished to be a Man

Adapted from the children’s fantasy novel by the American writer Lloyd Alexander, this Japanese musical is coming to Shanghai. Follow the story of Lionel, a house cat of the magical Stephanus, who longs to be a man. After many objections, Stephanus finally relents and the transformed Lionel begins his adventures in the town of Brightford. A mesmerizing show about love, collaboration and tolerance that is fun for the whole family.

May 31: Pushfest 2019

Push are once again putting on their film, discussion and skate festival, with this year’s iteration featuring the film Shanghai 6, which focuses in on the skateboarding scene in the city, while Leticia Bufoni and Aori Nishimura will also be present for a panel discussion. There will be a skateboarding competition later in the evening, before proceedings move to Dada for the afterparty, courtesy of Yeti Out.

May 31: Yuksek Live in Shanghai

Bar Rouge Shanghai welcomes multi-faceted French DJ/Producer Yuksek who will play a set of his unique sounds for clubbers this week. Expect an uncompromising combination of pop, disco and electro music blended together for the club.

Jun 1: Marc Melia Live in Shanghai

Majorca-born musician Marc Melia arrives in China with his first-ever solo album, Music for Prophet, which sees him make use of repetitive looping beats made on gorgeous spacy synthesizers, ostensibly aimed at robot ears. In the works for around five years, Melia made the album on a Prophet synth and accompanied it with an awesome 43-minute video of a cassette tape of Music for Prophet flying into space.

Jun 1-2: Samajam 2 – Super Djembe

The sequel to China's most popular musical kids' show is headed to Shanghai. With brand new musical instruments, improved settings plus more vibrating rhythms, SAMAjAM 2 - Super Djembe is sure to provide families with even more fun and participation that the first iteration of the smash hit – if that’s possible.

Jun 2: Toyota AFL Premiership Season St Kilda vs. Port Adelaide

The Aussie Rules Footy League returns this June! And it's a real doozy: Melbourne's St. Kilda FC taking on Port Adelaide at Shanghai's Jiangwan Stadium. Expect hip 'n' shoulders, speedsters and sausage rolls galore in this hardball of a game. With both teams on the up after a quiet few seasons rebuilding, this'll be a real humdinger as both sides keep their eyes on the prize: the granny, the Grand Final at the MCG in September. Whether you're new to the game and looking for a whopper of an introduction to AFL, a devout Saint, or a diehard Prison Bar there's only one place to be this June. This matchup is not to be missed!

Jun 2: Sainkho Kosmos Live in Shanghai

Tuva, a Russian autonomous republic that lies to the North of Mongolia, has maintained its fascinating traditional culture and arts, taking in influences from Siberia, Turkic countries to the West, Mongolian and Chinese influences to the South. Sainkho Kosmos, a musician from Tuva, is famed for her incredible throat-singing, while her music also employs aspects of jazz, electronica and more modern compositional methods.
