That's Shanghai Sports Awards Nominees: Best Newcomer

Shanghai sports friends, here we go again. The Camel and That’s Shanghai 9th Annual Sports Awards will take place on February 21. Once a year, we gather to recognize those who have truly made their mark on the city’s amateur sports scene: from the home-run hitters and KO punchers, to those who lift up their mates when all seems lost. They’re our friends, our family and, occasionally, our blood-thirsty rivals.

There are 16 awards across six categories in the general selection, plus three Under 18s categories with 12 awards to be won, with big prizes from F45 and REVO up for grabs. There will also be a raffle fundraiser on the night, with all money raised from that going to the Baobei Foundation.

And now, without further ado, here are the nominations for Best Newcomer:

Shanghai Softball - Taylor Adkinson

Helicopter Mechanic Taylor Adkinson has not been in Shanghai long but has made a huge impact on the local sports newcomer of the year. With his partner in crime Emily (Canadian Olympic Champion and no slouch herself) they have jumped in with a competitive nature  spanning multiple sports in the Shanghai community. Taylor actively has joined no less than three challenging sports: volleyball, hockey and softball communities, all of which have benefited from the competitive nature Taylor and the friendship he brings to each sport. You know when Taylor shows up you are going to get the very best every time he takes the court, rink or field.  Taylor has also become part of the Shanghai International community by joining and playing with the International Stepdads team. We are looking forward to what Taylor does in the future here and are happy to welcome him and Emily to the Shanghai Sports community.

Dolphins Rugby - Andick

Andy and Nick - or is it Nick and Andy -,  who the hell knows? These two are joined at the hip, who have splashed down with the Dolphins and made an immediate impact. Aside from running rings around opponents on the field, these two actively brought new members into the pod and caused all kinds of havoc off the field as well.

Shanghai Tigers (AFL) - Michael Findlay

Michael has single-handedly redefined the term 'trailing spouse’, showing that, despite the reason you're aboard, you can always lead from the front. He came into an environment featuring many Michaels, however he quickly established the 'Michael Ranking System' and is currently the #1 seed. A dual AFL Shanghai Cup and Asia Champ winner, he was also selected as part of a special Australian envoy to the Russia World Cup where the combination of his home-made Russian accent and flawless Slavic squat technique made him a hit with the locals. He was last seen flexing his biceps on the helipad of a yacht floating down the Moskva River wearing nothing but a dressing robe and inappropriately tight shorts.

Women’s Football (SWIFC) - Meizhi Ng

Meizhi Ng is one of our top goal keepers for Shanghai Women’s International Football Club. Meizhi always comes to practice with fantastic energy, team spirit, and encouragement to all players. Meizhi was a key goal keeper in the Gulangyu Cup, helping her team take the second place trophy. Her skills and development with SWIFC have been seen in her shut-outs in games, and defensive abilities. She is a player who continues to overcome any obstacle on the field.

Pink Dragons Rugby - Ann Marie Herward

From the moment Ann Marie joined this club, she has been a ray of sunshine on the field, a smashing player, and a determined leader of the backs. She showcases her experience in each and every game, but more over, she uses her experience to help others grow, flourish and lead them to success on the pitch. Having Ann Marie’s kindness, support in developing the team and enthusiasm for developing women’s rugby in Shanghai makes her the perfect nominee for The New Comer of the Year. These efforts and keenness, Ann Marie shows in anything she commits to: The Pink Dragon ladies & Gaelic ladies are both very happy to have her. We look forward to the season ahead and keeping up the good work.
