Nov 1: Fleurie

This dark, eerie, contemporary folk artist from Michigan is putting on an intimate set at Mao tomorrow. With a hint of electro-pop, her songs are hollowing and the ease at which she drifts through an impressive vocal range unsettling. The perfect post-Halloween show.

Nov 1, 8pm, RMB240-580. Mao Livehouse, see event listing.

Nov 2: Zhaojiabang

Shanghai garage-rock band Zhaojiabang are bringing back the '90s. The guys are throwing a party together with other Shanghai indie artists Revival, Imbalance and Wheelhouse. Expect noisy grunge, Polaroid flashes, cassettes and postcards giveaways, wheee.

Nov 2, 8pm, no cover. Youin House, see event listing.

Nov 2: Genre Spanner

Genres on genres on genres. Ska, metal and funk can be heard at Harley's this Friday night. Doors are at 6pm so come early if ya want - they say the music's gonna run late.

Nov 2, 9.30pm, no cover. Harley's Undergroud, see event listing.

Nov 2-3: New Shake City: The 90s R&B Concert

We're just gonna give you their copy because we really appreciate Shake's vibe and it never needs re-writing. Thanks Ian: Beepers, baggy pants, crop tops, floppy disks, Lexus sedans and 90's R&B. Shanghai's house of funk and soul takes it back to back in the day, with a concert featuring the music of TLC, Jade, Janet, BBD, Michael, Ginuwine and lots more. Singer / producer Courtney Knott directs and stars in this show, joined by SHAKE's six-piece band. Dressing up in living colors highly encouraged: from New Jack Swing to Hip Hop Soul and beyond. Costume contest on the 27th with winners announced at midnight! Dinner from 6pm. Live music from 10.30pm.

Nov 2-3, 6pm, RMB80. Shake, see event listing.

Glittering synths, triumphant riffs and catchy, sing-along vocals – these are all characteristics of the supreme sounds of ‘80s glam rock and pop. Stockport indie rockers Blossoms are hitting Shanghai this week for a killer show - check our article with them here for more of what's up.

Nov 3, 9pm, RMB220 pre sale, RMB280 door. Bandai Namco Shanghai Base, see event listingbuy tickets.

Nov 3: Nocturnes

Emotional, sultry and atmospheric, Nocturnes are coming straight from Beijing for a heavy and immersive set at Lofas. Their mature vocals and quick, vibrating guitar riffs make for a really distinct sound, and they've just released their new music video (VPN needed).

Nov 3, 9pm, RMB60-80. Lofas, see event listing.

Nov 3: Hip Hop and Rock Fusion

Rock-Party.jpg

Black China Music is bringing together two of the most prevalent bands in Shanghai for a night of rock, punk and hip hop. Round Eye (you may have caught them as DEVO on Saturday) and all female punk band Ugly Girls are bringing their usual energy for a night with those championing the resurgence of R&B and hip hop - Queen Diamond and Supastar Defined.

Nov 3, 9pm, no cover. Harley's Underground, see event listing.

Nov 7: Oddisee

DC native, rapper and producer Oddisee has caught the eye of Time, NPR and Stereogum. With heavy jazz and soul influences, he's consistently been putting out diverse albums with complex narratives and stomach settling beats. There's a reason he's performed alongside Kendrick Lamar and Herbie Hancock.

Nov 7, 8pm, RMB240 pre sale, RMB300 door. Mao Livehouse, see event listing, buy tickets.
