French electronic band Kid Francescoli comes
to Shanghai for a show at MAO Livehouse. Comprised of
keyboardist/vocalist Mathieu Hocine, singer/songwriter Julia Minkin and
drummer Mathieu Cheretien, they are known for romantic and uplifting
electropop.

Aug 3: Cabaret Soiree

Aug 3: R3hab

R3hab is a Dutch EDM producer known for hits like 'Pump the Party' and 'Prutata,' a collaboration with Afrojack. He has a weekly radio show on Sirius XM called I NEED R3HAB and released his first studio album, Trouble, this past September. Catch his show at Taxx.

Aug 3: Asian Vibes China Debut Series: Ryuji Takeuchi

For their first show at ALL as part of a new series bringing underground acts from around Asia for their debut Shanghai performance, Asian Vibes hosts Japan's industrial techno pioneer Ryuji Takeuchi. His sound is known for its mix of EBM, industrial, grunge, noise, distortion and metal.

Aug 3: Popasuda

The latest Popasuda night goes down at Dada this weekend. Head there for an epic 8-hour set of global bass, reggae and dancehall from around the world mixed by Skinny Brown.

Aug 4: Lamp

Shanghai live music promoter Ye Records brings over Japanese trio Lamp
for an extensive China tour. Known for their smooth sound that’s a
quirky blend of pop, soul and lounge music, Lamp released their latest
album, Her Watch, earlier in 2018. Catch their Shanghai show at Bandai

Aug 4: Jean-Michel Jarre - The Concerts in China

Held in a secret location near People's Square, Atomic Krew's Absurde Seance hosts this screening of The Concerts in China, a documentary about the 1981 China tour of French electronic musician Jean-Michel Jarre. One of the first foreign artists to perform in Reform era China, he played for upwards of 120,000 people in Beijing and Shanghai. Cover price includes 4 vodka-based drinks.

Aug 4-5: G.E.M Queen of Hearts Tour

Hong Kong pop star G.E.M. (short for Get Everybody Moving) comes to Shanghai for two shows at the Mercedes-Benz Arena as part of her Queen of Hearts Tour. Known for finishing second place in the 2014 edition of Chinese reality show I Am a Singer, she also was the only Asian artist listed on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2016.

Aug 5: Single Dogs Social Club

Promoters Single Dogs Social Club bring together an eclectic line-up of Shanghai and China-based bands at Mao Livehouse. Punk band HEY!LILY! is joined by Polyphozia, a post-grunge band led by the singer of American band Fuck Your Birthday, emo band Minds of Billy and electrofunk band Alepay.

Aug 7: Botanicals Month Launch Party

Shake teams up with Peddler's Gin for a month of showcasing the 11 flavors that go into their booze, from Buddha's hand to Sichuan pepper to lotus flower. The launch party features a special menu of summery drinks plus funk and soul music all night.

Aug 8: Will Pan

Chinese-American pop star, rapper, actor, The Rap of China judge and general heartthrob Will Pan comes to Shanghai for a concert at Mercedes-Benz Arena. Born in West Virginia, he moved to Taiwan at age 7 and began finding fame after entering a Chinese singing contest in 1999.

Aug 9: Heatwave Launch Party

Shake launches their new Thursday party for August featuring singer, artist and self-described 'creative octopus' Redic. He'll team up with a guest musician and the Shake band every week for an eclectic night of rock, R&B and soul.

Aug 10: Forests

Forests are a trio from Taiwan dealing in quirky distorted pop-rock songs, or as they describe it, taking 'irresistibly catchy guitar pop and throwing it down a flight of stairs.' The duo are taking their unique and somewhat psychedelic new album, Idol Collapse, on a China tour, and are passing through Mao Livehouse this month for what's sure to be an excellent show with Shanghai band Foster Parents in support.

Aug 10: Marian Hill

Philadephia duo Marian Hill comes to Shanghai as part of their debut China tour from Haze Sounds. Known for their jazzy, electronic R&B, their tracks mix heavy basslines with vocalist Samantha Gongol's ethereal vocals and introspective lyrics. Catch their show at Modern Sky lab.

Aug 10-11: Children's Ballet of Kiev: Swan Lake

Russian composer Tchaikovsky changed the world of ballet forever when he debuted Swan Lake 135 years ago. See the classic masterpiece in a whole new way with the Children's Ballet of Kiev, making it great family-friendly option.

Aug 10-12: Charlie Chaplin Live Orchestra Screening: The Kid

As part of its retrospective on the founder of modern comedy, Yuz Museum hosts a special screening of the film The Kid with a live orchestra score. The first film directed by Chaplin, The Kid tells the story of his classic character the Tramp and his friendship with an orphan. Score performed by Shanghai Light Music Orchestra and conducted by Swiss conductor Philippe Beran.

Aug 11: Checkpoint!

Shanghai game fair Checkpoint! returns for another afternoon of locally-produced video games, board games, workshops, talks, and VR demos. With the aim of connecting people in the real world through gaming, the DIY fair's debut last summer was a big hit. A collaboration between Touch Our Buttons, Random Encounters and Peak Pixel Games, it's a free day of exploring innovative new games.

Aug 11: Love Bang: Culture Crash!

Love Bang unleashes a few punk bands into the club for their latest party. Shanghai bands Dirty Fingers and Mirrors join Cruel Buddhist, Baijiu Robot, Kin.J and VJ Chen Xixi for a mash-up of live bands and electronic music. See it all go down on the dance floor at Elevator.

Aug 11: Snap! Party Cruise

Aug 12: National Theatre Live: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (Screening)

For those who missed the Shanghai run of acclaimed West End play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, National Theatre Live is screening a performance of the show this month. Head to Huangpu Theatre to see a filmed version of the show, which is notable for its sensitive and innovative approach to depicting autism and Asperger's.

Aug 14: Mike Shinoda Post Traumatic Tour

Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda brings his deeply personal solo album, Post Traumatic, on tour through Shanghai at Jing'an Sports Center. Recorded while Shinoda was processing his grief after the death of Linkin Park bandmate Chester Bennington, the album is far different than his Linkin Park work but was acclaimed for its honesty and hopeful tone.

Aug 16: Wolf Alice

One of the UK's best bands of the 2010s thanks to virtuosic frontwoman Ellie Rowsell, Wolf Alice comes to Shanghai for the first time this month. They're on tour promoting their acclaimed second album, Visions of a Life, which spans everything from incandescent pop-rock to punk and shoegaze. Catch what's sure to be a memorable show at Modern Sky Lab.

Aug 16-25: Matthew Bourne's Cinderella

This innovative dance production takes the classic fairytale Cinderella and sets it in London during World War II, mixing glamor and fantasy with the dark realities of war. Directed by famed UK choreographer Matthew Bourne, the show has been a major hit since its premiere in 1997.

The world's greatest circus, Cirque du Soleil, returns to Shanghai with a colorful new production themed after James Cameron's sci-fi opus, AVATAR. The show is a multimedia spectacle features vibrant stage design that brings to live the natural world of the Na'vi people and breathtaking feats by its performers.

Aug 17: Duck Fight Goose with Foster Parents

Seasoned local indie band Duck Fight Goose perform their latest album, 2016's experimental electronic piece CLVB ZVKVNFT, as part of a summer season of concerts for D Force Records. Performing in support is Shanghai math-rock duo Foster Parents, who are at work on new music. Don't miss this solid pairing of Shanghai bands.

Aug 17-18: Ron Josol

With 20 years of experience in comedy and dozens of international tours under his belt, Ron Josol brings his witty observational comedy to Shanghai, where he first performed as an opener for Russell Peters back in 2004 and returned last year for a successful run of shows. Aug 17-19: Erth's Dinosaur Zoo Live!

This Australian production of Erth's Dinosaur Zoo Live! uses vivid and technically impressive puppetry to bring live-size dinosaurs to vibrant life onstage. Little ones will love the exciting realism of the puppets, who interact with kids on stage. It's a tyrannosauric treat for ages 3 and above.

Aug 18: Transmission

Originally from Prague and founded in 2006, this large-scale indoor festival is a celebration of trance music. Headliners for the Shanghai show include Andy Moor, BT, Driftmoon, Orjan Nilsen, Sander van Doorn and lots more. The festival is also especially well-known for its spectacular light show.

Aug 18: Vancouver Sleep Clinic

The solo project of Brisbane-born musician Tim Bettinson, Vancouver Sleep Clinic deals in ambient electronic pop and R&B with icy vocals. After collaborations with artists like ZHU, Drew Love and Gnash, he began releasing new solo music in 2018, including hits like 'Closure.' Catch his Shanghai show at Yuyintang.

Aug 21: Why Don’t We

Aug 21-23: Hiroaki Umeda Solo Show

Choreographer and multidisciplinary artist Hiroaki Umeda is celebrated as a leading figure of the Japanese avant-garde art scene for his style of subtle yet visceral dance. He makes use of his background in lighting design and visual art to pair his dances with complex optics and sound for an immersive experience. Catch his latest solo show at the Shanghai International Dance Center Experimental Theatre.

The International Culture Exchange and Innovation Center teams up with MRD Group to host a workshop on Healing Through Art. B-Land showcases two notable UK rock bands. Kasabian is an electro-rock band formed in 1997 who've performed at festivals around the world and released six studio albums. Formed more recently in 2010, Bastille are an indie pop band who won the award for British Breakthrough Act at the Brit Awards before going on to release two albums.

Aug 30-Sep 12: RENT 20th Anniversary Tour
