During a 12-day China tour that kicked off on May 19, Alaskan Governor Bill Walker and his delegation visited Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou to fuel economic collaboration between Alaska and China. Following visits to both Chengdu and Beijing, the delegation arrived in Shanghai for the Alaska Seafood Seminar held by ASMI (Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute) at the W Hotel. Major seafood exporters from Copper River Seafood, Golden Harvest Alaska Seafood, Icicle Seafoods and Senior Directors from Trident Seafood all attended the event.
The Alaska Seafood Seminar played a big part in building a connection between Alaskan suppliers and Chinese traders. Guests enjoyed 10 different types of Alaskan seafood provided by ASMI, including king crab, snow crab, salmon, pollock, cod fillet, black cod, stingray, pollock roe, herring roe and sea slug. With this visit, Governor Walker was able to deepen his vision of creating a stable, reciprocal and amicable long-term partnership with China. The visit also helped to raise awareness of natural and delicious Alaskan seafood, which will lead to a significant boost in Chinese sales.
Alaska is the largest US state and it’s famous for its northern lights and scenic glaciers. Alaska’s remote location helps to create a pollution-free environment, making Alaskan waters some of the cleanest in the world. Thanks to strict legislation regarding fishing management and high levels of marine protection, the Alaskan seafood industry remains committed to providing healthy and sustainable seafood products. For this reason, Alaska has become one of the largest suppliers of diversified seafood in the world. Delicious Alaskan seafood products include five kinds of salmon (king, coho, sockeye, chum and pink), three types of crab (king, snow and Dungeness), as well as black cod, cod fillet, pollock and flatfish.
ASMI, a public-private partnership between the State of Alaska and the Alaskan seafood industry, was established to set standards for food security and quality certification in the seafood industry and assist in marketing efforts. ASMI works to promote rich and healthy diets by providing marine products that are high in protein and Omega-3s, while remaining low in fat.
ASMI has initiated consumer campaigns and promotional activities in Chinese mainland and Hong Kong since 1997. In recent years, Chinese consumers have turned their attention towards pursuing a healthy lifestyle by working out and maintaining a natural dietary routine. This shift has triggered increased demand for Alaskan seafood.
Currently, Alaskan seafood products are readily available through many well-known channels, including luxury hotels such as Shangri-La, Grand Hyatt, and many high-end restaurants. These products can easily be found in e-commerce giants such as JD, Tmall, and SFBest, and locally in high-end supermarkets such as City Super, Ole’ and Hema. These many options make it possible for Chinese consumers to experience the natural goodness of Alaskan seafood from thousands of miles away.
