We Tried McDonald's New Superhero Burgers and They Suck

'We Try It' is a regular series where we try the latest off-beat food and beverage offerings.

It has been an eclectic year for McDonald’s in China. There have been more Michelin-inspired burgers, maple syrup chicken wings, that letdown of a burger inspired by the third Despicable Me film, a fork made of French fries and a highly-publicized name change.

But the folks at McDonald’s just couldn’t let 2017 slide into history without releasing a couple more peculiar menu items: the Superman Burger and the Batwich, Batman Sandwich or whatever the hell you want to call it.

Otherwise known as the ‘Ultra Bacon Chicken Burger’ and the ‘Dark Black Pepper Chicken Burger,’ these two are apparently part of the Middle Kingdom marketing campaign for the recently released Justice League film.

Below we investigate these new burgers to see if ‘justice is served’:

Ultra Bacon Chicken Burger (aka: the Superman Burger)

Although set within an aesthetically pleasing (and decent tasting) bun, this sandwich fails on a number of fronts. For starters, the innards of the Superman Burger are basically the same as that super-shitty Minion Burger we tried back in June, minus the cheese-stuffed slab of chicken.

Also like the Minion Burger, this hanbaobao appears to utilize subpar poultry. The chicken meat in our order had a distinctive brown hue and unpleasant texture, perhaps an indication that McDonald’s doesn't use the 100 percent chicken breast fillet they claim to have in their nuggets.

Our final complaint about the Superman burger is that it came with wilted lettuce. Ew.

The verdict: sooooo not super.

Dark Black Pepper Chicken Burger (aka: the Batwich)

For accuracy's sake, we'd rename this sandwich the ‘holy shit, there is a fuckton of black pepper of this thing’ burger. This McMonster delivers a peppery punch that is both overpowering and unpleasant.

Couple that with yet more withered lettuce and a sauce-soaked piece of chicken that looked uncomfortably like a cancerous lung and you have yourself a ‘joker’ of a meal.

The verdict: “What the hell are you?” – Carmine Falcone.

The best part of ordering either of these unheroic burgers may have been the free toy. But in all honesty, as full(ish) grown adults, we’d rather have a proper sandwich than a crappy figurine.
