Oct 12: Javiera Mena

[ED NOTE: This show was originally slated for Mao Livehouse, but has been moved to the Pearl.] Considered one of the most important Chilean pop stars of the last century, Javiera Mena comes to Shanghai for her debut China show at The Pearl. Her music is an exhilarating mix of techno, disco and synth pop, and sheís considered a queer icon thanks to songs like her smash hit 'Otra Era.'

Oct 13: JZ Festival Kickoff Party

UNICO hosts the official opening party for JZ Festival with performances by two notable jazz musicians and their bands. Belgian jazz pianist Eric Legnini will play with his quartet, while renowned Italian jazz vocalist Karima will perform with the backing of her quintet

Oct 14: The Candle Thieves

The Candle Thieves are a UK-based duo whose sunny pop aesthetic belies darker, contemplative lyrics about life and its foibles. They're returning to the Mainland, where they debuted several years ago, for an extensive China tour. Check out our interview with the band here.

Oct 14: We are Shanghai Vol. 5

The free release show for the fifth edition of We are Shanghai, an expat-run annual project showcasing bands and musicians who are based in the city, goes down this weekend at Inferno. The line-up includes a selection of acts who are featured on the album, including veteran hardcore punk band Loudspeaker,  thrash/groove-metal band Hitobashira, hip-hop duo Skinny OG and Queen Diamond, and more.

Oct 14-15: JZ Festival

One of the Shanghai's oldest and most well-loved music festivals returns for its 13th year. The headliners this year include 80s funk troupe Kool & the Gang, Andy Summers of the Police, and Grammy-winning Cuban pianist Chucho Valdes. Head there for a fun weekend outdoors and a mix of local and international jazz talent. Check out our full preview of the festival here.
