Shanghai customs officials busted a very fishy drug smuggling case in November, in which more than 1.1 tons of cocaine were hidden among frozen mackerel, report the Shanghai Daily.
The container marked "frozen Pacific mackerel" was scheduled to be transported from South America to Cambodia, stopping in Shanghai for the goods to be transferred.
But when the container was inspected, as part of an international cooperation between China and the United States, authorities found a total of 276 cartons containing crack cocaine.
Determined not to let the drug smugglers slip through the net, customs officials repacked the cartons (after removing the cocaine), resealed the container, and sent it on its way to Cambodia.
When it arrived in Phnom Penh, four suspects — two Vietnamese-Canadians and two Vietnamese — were busted receiving the delivery. They'll now face the scales of justice, rather than the scaly narcotics.
Authority said this was the biggest cocaine smuggling haul found in China in recent years, bigger than the suitcases made of cocaine earlier this month.
