After five years of construction costing USD5.5 billion, the first Disneyland in the Chinese mainland celebrated its grand opening on June 16, 2016. It had aimed for 10-12 million visitors in its first year of operation, according to the park's joint venture partner.

Last month, the Disney group revealed that it had attracted over 10 million visitors in 11 months.

In honor of the park's first anniversary, Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger headed over to Shanghai for celebrations last week.

Shanghai Disney First Year Anniversary

“Shanghai Disney Resort’s first anniversary is cause for great celebration for everyone involved in bringing this spectacular dream to life,” Iger said. “We’re grateful to the people of China for making this unique destination a tremendous success—more than 11 million guests have already visited, and we look forward to welcoming many more in the years to come.”

Celebrations last week included a fireworks display at the Enchanted Storybook Castle, as well as floating lanterns hovering over the park.

Expansion plans for the resort are already in place, with a new Toy Story Land scheduled to open next year.
